Mountain Nyala Hunting in Ethiopia

The Mountain Nyala may be the ultimate of all the spiral horns yet. Although it was the last one discovered, this mountain dwelling spiral horn is native only to Ethiopia, and does not lack popularity. This 500lb antelope is found in heights ranging from 6,000 to 12,000 feet, amongst different Ethiopian mountain ranges.

Surprisingly, even though it is a cousin of the common Nyala found in Southern Africa, the Mountain Nyala bears more resemblance, as per body size and looks, to a Kudu. Maybe it should have been named the Mountain Kudu. As with all spiral horn antelopes, the Mountain Nyala bears a distinctive and elegant spiral with 1 1/2 twists finishing off with the trademark ivory tips.

The HUNT

A spiral horn worth the 9,000ft climb...

"Waking up to a cool, damp, misty morning with a bit of a breeze, I grab my windbreaker for the journey. I have planned the morning, knowing we will have to check some of the different vantage points I have mapped out. From here, with clear visibility, we hope to see the coveted trophy we are after. With all vantage points within 30 min from fly camp, I have the chance to split up the group to cover more area.

As we reach the vantage point we were headed toward, the blanket that seemed to cover the mountains lifts, rather quickly, and the visibility on the opposite ridge resembles that of a painting. Now we sit. We sit and glass the area for any slight movement or sign of our prized trophy.

Two hours have gone by, and we have only had news of Nyala cows on the handheld radio from our other spotting team. We have seen a big boar, giant forest hog, and few nice male Melenicks Bushbuck. However, knowing that other chances will come, we do not take these opportunities, as we do not want to disturb the environment for the Mountain Nyala.

I look off to the side and see some clouds moving in quickly. My optimism dwindles, as we may have to call it a morning. Before my thoughts subside. I hear a light whistle—my lead tracker. He's seen something. I slowly position myself to see what he is seeing, and in that instant, through my binoculars, my optimism has just come back!

I take a couple seconds to look, and make sure I'm looking at what my mind is processing. An incredible lone Nyala bull, WAY over the government minimum of 30 inches. Immediately, I decide that's our bull, but I scratch my head as I am unsure about the range, knowing that the valleys are deceiving. I verify the distance with my range finder, 385 yards, and know it is possible with a 300 Win magnum zeroed in at 300 yards. I communicate with my client that he will have to shoot slightly downward, but it has to be quick as the clouds are moving in on us. With moments to spare, the client positions himself in a steady position, knowing this is his best chance so far. I turn to him and signal to put the cross heads on his back and gently squeeze the trigger."
